  • EMDR therapy stands for eye movement descentization and reprocessing. It is a highly researched, evidenced based psychotherapy approach. Through the use of bilateral stimulation (such as self-tapping or auditory beeps in each ear, it rewires your brain, so that you no longer feel the intensity and negative charge associated with past traumatic memories or distressing experiences in your life that have caused you to feel stuck.

  • Your first session will involve an assessment that includes your symptoms, what brought you to in for therapy, your goals, and your history. We will spend some time getting to know each other and discuss next steps. We will discuss what themes and pain points you may want to address using EMDR therapy.

    When ready for the next phases of EMDR therapy, you will be asked to focus on a specific memory or time in your life. Attention will be given to a negative image, belief, emotion, and body sensation and then to a positive belief indicating the issue was resolved.

    While you focus on the upsetting memory, I will begin sets of side-to-side eye movements, sounds, or taps ( a form of bilateral stimulation that will be predetermined together). I will ask you to notice what comes up for you after each set. You may start to notice experience shifts in insight or changes in images, feelings, or beliefs regarding the event.

    You have complete control to stop the me at any point if needed. The sets of eye movements, sounds, or taps are repeated until the event becomes less disturbing.

    EMDR therapy may be used within a standard talking therapy, as adjunctive therapy with a separate therapist, or as a treatment.
